A web built for humans is becoming a web where software can read, write, purchase, persuade and coordinate on behalf of people—or itself.

The first era of generative AI filled the internet with synthetic artifacts: text, images, code and audio. The next era adds synthetic participants. AI agents can monitor information, use tools, send messages, compare prices, schedule tasks and act across services with limited supervision.

This shift changes the social texture of the web. A persuasive account may not correspond to a person. A customer may be a procurement agent. A flood of comments may be coordinated software. A helpful assistant may be operating under instructions the recipient cannot see.

The old question was “Is this content real?” The new question is “Who or what is participating, and whose objective does it serve?”

Delegation creates layers of intent

An agent may act for a person, a company, a platform or another agent. The immediate message could be generated automatically while still expressing a legitimate human goal. Conversely, a human-looking interaction may conceal an optimization objective unrelated to the apparent conversation.

Identity therefore becomes more than a name. We may need to know whether an actor is human, delegated, autonomous, verified and authorized for the action being requested.

Machine speed changes bargaining power

Agents can compare thousands of options, contact many parties and react continuously. That can benefit individuals by reducing administrative work. It can also favor organizations with better data, stronger models and privileged access.

When both sides use agents, interaction may become a negotiation between systems long before a person sees the result. The human receives a summary of choices already filtered by software.

Design requirementDelegation should preserve a clear record of what the agent was allowed to do, what it actually did and where human approval entered the process.

Reputation systems will be stressed

Ratings and follower counts assume a rough relationship between accounts and participants. Cheap agents can create activity that looks social without corresponding to independent people. Platforms will respond with stronger verification, but verification can also concentrate power and reduce anonymity.

There is no simple solution. A trustworthy web needs both accountability and room for privacy. The useful distinction may be proof of uniqueness or authorization without forcing every action into a public legal identity.

Human presence may need to be declared

Some contexts will remain comfortable with automation. Nobody needs a person to compare shipping rates. Other contexts—medical consent, intimate conversation, legal commitments, high-value purchases—may require an explicit human checkpoint.

We may develop new etiquette: “human reviewed,” “agent drafted,” “automated response,” “live person present.” These labels will be imperfect, but social systems often depend on visible expectations.

Build for inspectable agency

The important question is not whether agents will exist. It is whether their operation remains legible. Users should be able to see what an agent knows, which services it touched, what commitments it made and how to stop it.

Automation becomes safer when power is paired with auditability. Otherwise the internet may feel increasingly active while becoming harder to know who is actually there.
